Midlands Urology is proud to see robotic surgery placed at the heart of the government’s 10-year plan for the NHS, as recently outlined by health secretary Wes Streeting.
As the first provider to introduce robotic surgery in the Midlands at our private urology clinic, we have long championed the benefits of this innovative technology for our patients.
Mr Streeting’s plan, soon to be published in full, sets out an ambitious vision for improving NHS productivity through medical technology.
A key part of this is the expanded use of robot-assisted surgery, which is set to become the standard for a growing range of procedures — including urology, ENT (ear, nose and throat), general surgery, gynaecology, trauma, orthopaedics and cardiothoracic operations.
Currently, around one in 60 elective operations are robot-assisted. The government aims to increase this to one in eight within the next decade.
Robotic surgery offers significant benefits, including less invasive procedures, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times and better patient outcomes, all of which help reduce pressure on NHS hospitals.
Peter Cooke commented:
“This is great news for patients across the UK. Expanding access to robotic surgery will mean more people can experience faster recoveries and better outcomes. It’s encouraging to see the NHS prioritising technology that can make such a positive difference.”
The government’s plan also proposes introducing financial incentives for hospitals to adopt best practices, including robotics, while discouraging outdated surgical methods. Learn more about our robotic surgery procedures.
